Located in the central part of Peloponnese peninsula, in an exceptional beautiful district called Arcadia, visitors can find Mantineia, one of the first regions in Greece to practice organic viticulture.
One can find referrals of ancient Mantineia as Eratini in Homer’s epic. This is also where the first Greek sparkling wine was produced with a traditional method. In 1898, the Papageorgiadis brothers bottled sparkling wine, which in 1900 won the silver medal at the Paris World Exhibition.
Vineyards of the wine growing PDO zone of Mantineia are planted extensively to the Moschofilero grape variety – one of the four ambassador varieties of the Greek vineyard abroad – which offers wines of a completely different style from the usual Greek wine. The semi-mountainous terroir with a special climate and infertile, and the, rocky clay soils Arcadia bring to our glasses a fresh crispy sweet and floral nose wine, slightly pale in color with low alcohol.
Moschofilero, although it is a grayish-pink variety, is vinified in such way as to produce white, rose and aged wines, blanc de gris, as well as, sparkling dry and semi-dry wines.
While Moschofilero makes up the majority of vineyard plantings, producers in the region are experimenting with indigenous and international grape varieties such as Malagousia, Agiorgitiko and Gewurztraminer .
The PDO zone of Mantineia is the second most popular PDO zone in Greece with Agiorgitiko being the first. Quality wines of the region can be compared to white wines of Central Europe, Alsace, Austria and Northern Italy.
